The Taravo River (Taravu in Corsica) is a real natural nugget sheltering a phenomenal wealth of plant and animal species, many of which are endemic, rare or protected!
In recognition of the rare character of its environment, in 2017 the Taravo river obtained the “Site Rivières Sauvages” label.
The latter is a tool at the service of managers of running water aquatic environments. Its objective is to improve the protection and conservation of rivers that show good ecological functioning. One more step to preserve and enhance this exceptional territory, as part of a territorial sustainable development project led by the Collectivity of Corsica.
65 kilometers long, the Taravo river (Taravu in Corsica) has its source at an altitude of 1,500 meters, north of Monte Grosso, to flow into the Mediterranean at the level of the Gulf of Valinco, between Porto Pollo and Abbartello. Its watershed covers or intersects 31 municipalities of Corse-du-Sud.
Many testimonies, such as the prehistoric site of Filitosa, indicate that the human presence around Taravo dates back to 6000 years BC. Genoese bridges, fountains, washhouses, irrigation canals, mills… over the centuries, Man has known how to tame water for his vital and economic needs.

The river thus remains a veritable natural nugget, home to a phenomenal wealth of plant and animal species, many of which are endemic, rare or protected.
Three bridges from the Genoese era span the Taravo today: the Trinity Bridge, the Abra Bridge and the Calzola Bridge. Built in freestone, with their humpback silhouettes, their raised barrel arches and narrow roadways, these jewels of island heritage fit perfectly into the bucolic setting of this land of water.
Wild and dynamic, the Taravo has a relatively high flow all year round, allowing the practice of canoeing and kayaking practically throughout its course. Hiking or horseback riding, cycling, sport fishing… The Taravo Valley also offers a majestic setting for other leisure activities, further emphasizing the link between the territory and Man.
